Mobile Device Management (MDM) is the term used to describe the administration of mobile devices, including smartphones, tablet computers, laptops and desktop computers. MDM is usually implemented with the use of third party software that has a range of management features and is one element of the full range of Mobility services offered by AVR.
The role of MDM is to help employees keep productive and not to breach corporate policies. In many organisations, MDM deals with segregating corporate data, securing emails and corporate documents on devices, also integrating and managing mobile devices including laptops and handhelds of various categories. MDM may be driven by either on-premises or cloud-based systems.
As the range of mobile devices grows and expands, many new types of product will be connected as the now widely discussed phrase ‘Internet of Things’ demonstrates. The systems supported by Mobile Device Management become more about basic device management and less about the mobile platform itself. MDM tools are for both company-owned and employee-owned (BYOD) devices across the enterprise or mobile devices owned by consumers.
By monitoring and protecting the data and configuration settings for all mobile devices in the network, MDM reduces support costs and risks to the business of data breaches.
AVR has extensive experience of MDM and also EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management) and works with a number of security and mobility vendors, including AirWatch, MobileIron, IBM Maas360, SOTI and Lookout Mobile Security. They have developed solutions to secure and protect data across the network, including mobile devices. Many of these integrate well with MDM programmes and provide additional levels of data security. Here’s a short animated video we produced with Lookout that you might find helpful:
