Changes to Apple’s Device Enrolment Program and Volume Purchase Program
Apple is moving their existing Device Enrolment Program (DEP) and Volume Purchase Program (VPP) to end of life on December 1, organisations will need to upgrade to Apple Business Manager by that date. Apple Business Manager offers a single portal to cover the functionality of the old DEP and VPP portals, and after upgrading you will retain access to your existing accounts, MDM servers, devices, server tokens and app licenses. After upgrading, you will no longer have access to the old DEP and VPP portals.
How to upgrade
You will need to log in to deploy.apple.com or business.apple.com using your Apple Deployment Agent account and then follow the instructions in the portal. You will be asked to enter your organisation’s website, which will then be used as the default domain for your Managed Apple IDs which will look like ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’
Changes in Apple Business Manager
The existing Agent users from DEP and VPP now become Administrators, and each organisation can have up to five Administrators. DEP Admins now become Device Managers, VPP Admins now become Content Managers, admin accounts used to create other administrative accounts now become People Managers.
Those accounts that did not have two-factor authentication set up will have to do this when they first login to Apple Business Manager.
Managed Apple IDs appear to have a key role going forward for Apple devices, as not only will they be used in Apple Business Manager but also for the new User Enrolment functionality that is being introduced in iOS 13.
