A firewall is a network security device that grants or rejects network access to traffic flows between an untrusted zone (e.g., the Internet) and a trusted zone (e.g., a private or corporate network). The firewall works a lot like passport control at an airport: checking traffic as it passes through, where it came from and where it’s going, and routing it along the correct protocol and port. Firewalls enforce access controls through a positive control model, which states that only traffic defined in the firewall policy is allowed onto the network; all other traffic is denied.
Next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) were created in response to the evolving sophistication of applications and malware. Application and malware developers have largely outwitted the long-standing port-based classification of traffic by building port evasion techniques into their programs. Today, malware piggybacks these applications to enter networks and became increasingly networked themselves (connected to each other on the computers they individually infected).
An NGFW will act more like passport control and customs combined, inspecting not just where traffic has come from and where it’s going but also what the packet of data actually contains.
Whilst firewalls provide vital defence for your network, they should not be regarded as the only means. Those acting with malicious intent are becoming more sophisticated and threats are increasing. Recent analysis showed that in 2005 there were an average 25 threats a day across the globe, today, the number is almost 500,000 per day. Businesses and organisations need solutions that work with their firewalls against other forms of attack, including those that come via mobile devices and apps.
